Bailout Training and Downed Firefighter EMS Operations Drills for 10/19/26

October 20, 2026

This week's Monday night drills focused on “Bailout Training” for our Firefighters and “Downed Firefighter EMS Operations” for our EMS personnel.

During the “Bailout Training” portion of the drill, Vista Firefighters completed hands-on training with the personal bailout systems carried by our interior Firefighters. Members reviewed the proper deployment and operation of the system before practicing the techniques used to rapidly exit an upper floor of a structure should conditions deteriorate and a conventional exit no longer be available.

A bailout system provides an interior Firefighter with an emergency means of escape from an elevated position during a fire. Although the need to perform an emergency bailout is rare, regular hands-on training is critical so our Firefighters can confidently and safely operate the equipment during a life-threatening situation. Bailout Training is mandatory annual training for our interior Firefighters.

At the same time, Vista EMS personnel participated in a “Downed Firefighter EMS Operations” drill focused on the specialized challenges involved with treating an injured or medically compromised Firefighter. Members reviewed patient assessment, rapidly removing Firefighting gear and SCBA when necessary, airway management, CPR and AED operations, patient packaging, and coordinating continued medical care following removal from the hazard area.

Treating a downed Firefighter requires Fire and EMS personnel to work together quickly under challenging conditions. Training on both sides of the operation helps ensure our Firefighters are prepared to remove a member in distress while our EMS personnel are ready to immediately begin the specialized medical care they may require.

The Vista Fire Department is proud to provide both Fire and EMS services to our community, allowing our members to regularly train together and better understand each other's responsibilities during complex emergency incidents.
