| On Monday, October 12, 2026, at approximately 9:53 a.m., Station 3, Squad 7, Squad 4, and several EMS companies were dispatched to the area of Great Mills Road and Shangri-La Drive for a reported motor vehicle collision with entrapment.
Dispatchers advised responding crews that multiple 911 callers had reported a crash involving several vehicles, with one person heavily trapped. Firefighters from the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department, Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department, Naval Air Station Patuxent River, and NDWFD responded to the incident.
Squad 3 was the first fire apparatus to arrive on the scene, followed by Chief 3B and Engine 31. Crews found a three-vehicle collision with one occupant heavily pinned inside one of the vehicles.
Chief 3B established incident command, while Fire Chief 3 was assigned as the extrication group supervisor. Firefighters immediately began extrication operations while EMS personnel assessed and treated the injured occupants. Due to the seriousness of the crash, Maryland State Police Aviation Command was requested to land nearby.
Crews were able to free the trapped occupant in under 17 minutes from the time of dispatch. EMS personnel then transported three people to a nearby landing zone for helicopter transport.
NDWFD Engine 132 was initially dispatched to assist on the scene but was diverted to the landing zone. The landing zone was first established at Lexington Park Elementary School; however, Trooper 7 required a hard, paved landing surface due to recent rainfall. The school parking lot was full and could not be used, so crews relocated the landing zone to Lancaster Park, where the helicopters were able to land.
Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 transported two people to an area trauma center. Trooper 2 also landed nearby and transported the third person to an area trauma center.
Great Mills Road and the surrounding area experienced traffic delays while emergency crews operated on the scene. Motorists were urged to use caution in the area and allow additional space for police, fire, EMS, and aviation personnel working at the incident.
The Bay District Volunteer Fire Department reminds motorists to remain alert, avoid distractions, and use extra caution at intersections. Safe driving helps protect not only those behind the wheel, but also passengers, pedestrians, and emergency responders working along local roadways. |
