This Week in Ford Times: When Work Boats Became Yachts

For most of the year, Chesapeake Bay’s skipjacks were hard-working oyster boats, heading out in cold weather to dredge the bay’s waters. But an October 1969 issue of Ford Times revealed that once a year, these rugged workhorses traded their daily routine for something a little more glamorous: a sailboat race.

On the last Saturday before oyster season began, crews polished their boats, hoisted freshly painted sails, and gathered near Annapolis, Maryland, for a regatta unlike any other. Boats that spent the rest of the year hauling oysters suddenly found themselves racing in front of thousands of spectators along the shoreline.

The transformation reminded the Ford Times writer, J. William Joynes, of Cinderella going to the ball. For one afternoon, these weathered working vessels became yachts, sailing across Chesapeake Bay under bright autumn skies while crowds watched from shore. By the day’s end, however, the festivities were over, and the boats returned to what they did best: supporting the region’s oyster industry.

The race helped preserve a disappearing piece of Chesapeake Bay history and honored the crews who kept one of America’s oldest maritime traditions alive. More than 50 years later, skipjack races are still held throughout Maryland, keeping this unique piece of Chesapeake Bay heritage alive for new generations.
