A prescribed burn is planned for the north end of the City Watershed near Pine Swamp, off Gambrill Park Road/Right Hand Fork, between November 9 and November 20, 2026.

The controlled burn will help restore an aging pitch pine stand by reducing the duff layer and competing vegetation so a new generation of seedlings can take root. Pitch pine seeds also provide a nutritious food source for wildlife.

Smoke may be visible on Catoctin Mountain. The burn will use low, controlled flames and will be directed by Maryland Department of Natural Resources fire staff.

During the burn, Gambrill Park Road/Right Hand Fork will be closed between Fishing Creek Road and Gate R6. All trails in the northeast section of the watershed will also be closed. The burn will proceed on one day within the two-week window only if conditions are favorable.
