This morning at approximately 8:55 AM, Mahopac Falls VFD was dispatched to a residence in our district for a reported odor of gas outside the home. On arrival, crews found a leaking propane tank under the deck that supplies the home's gas fireplace.

Members secured the scene and worked alongside the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services and the Putnam County Hazmat Team, who conducted a controlled burn-off to safely remove the remaining propane from the tank.

Thank you to Putnam County BOES and the Putnam County Hazmat Team for their assistance and expertise today, and to the homeowner for calling as soon as they noticed the smell.

A reminder for residents: if you smell gas or propane (a rotten egg odor), leave the area right away, don't use light switches or phones nearby, and call 911 once you're at a safe distance.
