As our community prepares for a night of trick-or-treating and festivities, the **Crisfield Volunteer Fire Department** reminds everyone that safety should always come first. A few simple precautions can help prevent accidents and ensure a fun, safe, and memorable Halloween for everyone π» Costume Safety π» Choose flame-resistant costumes, wigs, and accessories. Add reflective tape or glow sticks to improve visibility and use non-toxic face paint instead of masks that may obstruct vision. Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent tripping and avoid sharp objects or excessively long accessories. When lighting jack-oβ-lanterns, use battery-operated candles or LED lights instead of open flames. π¬ Trick-or-Treating Safety π¬ Young children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Older children should travel in groups, follow a planned route, and agree on a return time. Stay in familiar, well-lit neighborhoods, carry flashlights or LED lights, and use sidewalks whenever possible. Cross streets at designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals. Never enter a strangerβs home or vehicle. π Candy Safety π Inspect all treats before allowing children to eat them. Discard anything that is unwrapped, damaged, or appears suspicious. Pay special attention to hard candies and other potential choking hazards for young children. Homemade or unfamiliar treats should only be accepted from trusted sources, and anything that appears tampered with should be discarded. π Driver and Pedestrian Safety π Motorists should slow down, eliminate distractions, and remain especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children may unexpectedly enter the roadway, emerge from between parked vehicles, or be difficult to see in the dark. Trick-or-treaters should wear bright or reflective clothing, make eye contact with drivers before crossing, and never dart between parked cars. π General Halloween Safety π Keep children supervised throughout the evening. Consider identification bracelets or appropriate location-sharing devices for younger trick-or-treaters when helpful. Those hosting Halloween parties should promote responsible behavior, offer non-alcoholic beverages, and encourage guests to arrange safe transportation when needed. Homeowners should keep walkways clear, well-lit, and free of tripping hazards. β οΈβ οΈ Special Traffic Safety Reminder: Cullen Parkway and Route 413 β οΈβ οΈ Extra caution is urged for everyone trick-or-treating along Cullen Parkway and for those parking along Route 413. Heavy traffic in this area can create additional hazards for children, pedestrians, and motorists. Please remain alert, watch carefully for moving vehicles, and keep children a safe distance from the roadway. Drivers should reduce their speed and be prepared for increased pedestrian activity. Please keep roadways and access routes clear for emergency vehicles. Fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency responders must be able to travel through the area without delay. Improperly parked vehicles or blocked access routes can cost valuable time when someone needs emergency assistance. A few extra moments of caution can help prevent an accident and protect everyone in our community. 𧑠Let's Make Halloween Safe for Everyone! 𧑠Halloween safety depends on visibility, supervision, responsible driving, and thoughtful planning. By working together, we can help protect our children, our neighbors, and our community while ensuring everyone enjoys a fun and memorable Halloween. From all of us at the Crisfield Volunteer Fire Department, have a safe, happy, and spooktacular Halloween! ππ» Protecting Our Community Since 1874. |
