This week, we focused on rescuing one of our own. Rapid Intervention Crew, or “RIC” operations, are the specialized skills that are deployed to rescue firefighters who are lost, trapped, disoriented, injured, or are otherwise unable to exit a building on their own. Career members trained on “through the floor” rescue procedures, simulating a firefighter that was a victim of a floor collapse and was unable to self-rescue. Members used a rope secured to the downed firefighter, and hauled them up to safety. Statistically, this is one of the most likely scenarios that firefighters call a mayday and need rescuing. Volunteer members had a drill night this week as well. The drill topic was downed firefighter CPR. Members familiarized with the procedure of removing a downed firefighters PPE, while simultaneously performing chest compressions. The second part of the drill kept with the CPR theme, where members were in serviced on our new Lucas CPR device. Cardiac related emergencies are one of the leading causes of firefighter injuries. Having all of our members prepared to deliver interventions as soon as possible, gives anyone suffering from a cardiac arrest, the best possible chances at survival. |
