Electrical cords and extension cords can pose significant fire risks if they are damaged, overloaded, or used incorrectly. Do not use cords that are frayed, cracked, melted, or have exposed wires. Damaged cords should be replaced right away.

Do not overload outlets, power strips, or extension cords. Extension cords are meant for temporary use only and should be rated appropriately for the devices they power. Never connect multiple extension cords or power strips together. Extension cords should not be placed under rugs, carpets, furniture, or run through doorways, as this can cause damage or overheating. Avoid using extension cords for large appliances, such as space heaters, air conditioners, or refrigerators.

Keep electrical cords away from heat sources, water, and flammable materials. Use the proper cord for each appliance, and make sure plugs fit securely in the outlets. If you notice that an outlet, plug, or cord feels hot, changes color, or emits a burning smell, unplug it immediately and have it checked by a qualified electrician.

To reduce the risk of electrical fires, regularly inspect your cords, avoid overloading outlets, and use all electrical equipment safely.

If an electrical fire occurs, evacuate the residence and call 911. Do not use water to extinguish electrical fires. If it is safe to do so, you can turn off the power at your electrical panel or use a type C or ABC fire extinguisher. Even if you believe the fire is out, call 911 to make sure there are no hidden dangers.
