Fire Prevention Week is held annually during the week in which October 9 falls, commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 2026, it will run from Sunday, October 4, through Saturday, October 10. This observance is the longest-running public health and safety campaign in the United States, first established in 1922 to educate the public about fire safety and prevention.

The official theme for Fire Prevention Week 2026 is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” This theme highlights the importance of safe charging habits for devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, which are a common cause of household fires. The campaign offers guidance on preventing battery-related fires and encourages communities to adopt safer charging practices.
